Some recent sketches

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park displays three dimensional art (sculpture) in a grand landscape setting just off the M1 motorway in the North of England. This is the second sketching trip the artist, Lynne Roebuck, has made to the park.

Reclining figure

Above & below: Henry Moore's 'Three Piece Reclining Figure' out in the parkland. One sketch concerned with understanding its forms and the other a thumbnail looking at the larger composition.

Henry Moore

As a landscape printmaker interested in our sense, and experience, of landscape, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park holds a particular fascination for her. On this trip the fine artist concentrated on straight 'observational' sketches – like the previous trip, it was concerned mainly with getting to know the place.

sketchbook

Above: a photograph of the scene in the sketchbook, illustrating better than words could describe, the difference between the 'artists eye' and the camera lens (though this photo was taken by an iPhone so perhaps not a fair comparison).

Below: the sketch shown in the photograph above. In the foreground is 'Invasion' (Michael Zwingmann) and on the hill in the haze, is the 'Winter/Hörbelt' tower.

Initial sketch for print

Above is the artists favourite sketch of the day. It captures the experience of the park perfectly. The challenge now is to explore how this might translate into the atmospheric and modern landscape fine art print it suggested to her.

If you are interested in any follow-up articles she publishes here, it may be best at this time to subscribe to her blog, because Lynne is considering restructuring and redesigning this part of her website quite a lot..
